AECT Graduate Student Assembly
Metaverse Group

Metaverse Group
What is the Metaverse? Well, we’re working on that.

The term, Metaverse, was a term first used by Neal Stephenson in his book Snow Crash. Snow Crash is considered by many to be one of the seminal books that created the cyberpunk genre of literature. It has also been credited for inspiring many of today’s virtual worlds, augmented reality and virtual reality apps, and gave us context for how immersive online virtual environments could look like and how our physical and virtual identities could be managed, merged, and manipulated.

For the past two years, GSA has been informally exploring the Metaverse. We’ve created an
exhibition space in the virtual world of Second Life, toured spaces in Virabela [video https://youtu.be/oSc4uZxGb0w] and even took part in a virtual pride parade in World of Warcraft.

This year (2022) we have created a group for everyone (it’s okay if you are not a grad student) who would like to explore, build and do research in and on the Metaverse.

Every Monday, we’ll posting an article on the Metaverse through the AECT GSA Facebook (
https://www.facebook.com/groups/aectgsa).

We’ll be attending and touring virtual spaces at the Virtual Worlds Best Practices in Education, developing a Metaverse VR/AR/VW track at the eLearning Conference of Colorado and doing tours in VR and virtual world spaces.
Metaverse Group Tour
Extending the tour we wish we had time for during the eLearning Consortium of Colorado, we're going to the 2022 Fantasy Faire and Relay for Life in Second Life.

From our Metaverse tour, we are doing an additional livestreamed tour on Saturday May 7 at 7 pm MT/ 9 pm ET (US). We’ll be touring the Fantasy Faire (it’s like a Renaissance Faire but in a virtual world. Here’s the link to our livestream https://ucdenver.zoom.us/j/92733473684 If you have any questions about this please email Kae Novak through elcc.colorado@gmail.com.
