For the 2023 eLearning Consortium of Colorado Conference, here are the sessions that were accepted on AI in Education:

Wednesday April 5

11 am MT
Immerse Students in Learning with AR/VR/XR and AI!
Rachelle Dené Poth

Learn how to integrate AR, VR, and AI to engage learners, inspire creativity and spark curiosity. Transform instruction and create innovative and immersive learning experiences. Walk away with ideas to get started and learn how to move students from just exploring to creating and innovating!
11 am MT
AI: The Struggle is Real
Adrianne Ryland
Are your students using apps and websites to complete their work? Are your plagiarism rates soaring? It's time to better understand artificial intelligence sites, how students are using them, and how we can turn the table and use AI to our advantage. Participants will complete hands-on activities to walk away knowing more about how AI sites work, the impact AI has on student learning, and the positive tools it can provide in their teaching practices.
1 pm MT
Teaching with Wordtune (or Other AI Writing)
Wendeth Rauf
I will discuss how instructors can teach students to use AI writing (using Wordtune as an example) and how they can create homework that engages the student in the learning, but also acknowledges how to allow them to use the tool, rather than looking at it as "cheating."
2 pm MT
ChatGPT: A Discussion on the Fly
Jesse Thompson
Jesse Thompson, CSU learning designer and philosophy instructor leads a group of eLearning Consortium of Colorado conference participants on an open discussion about ChatGPT, AI image generators and AI in general.

Thursday April 6

9 am MT
ChatGPT: Friend, Foe or Opportunity
Sue Hellman
Educators have generally reacted to ChatGPT in one of two ways. Many warn that cheaters will prosper because ChatGPT can pass typical tests and generate fake essays that fool most readers. Others urge us to embrace AI and use it to improve our own work/life balance or with students as an “intelligent” tutor.

10 am MT
Neoliberal Ethics, Surveillance Capitalism, Digital Rights and AI
Kae Novak, Chris Luchs and Jerry Buchko

Technology including AI, the Metaverse, and analytics have once again come to the attention of educators, trainers, and of course business. This roundtable will answer the four compass point questions specifically looking at the ethics, data justice, and digital sovereignty issues of this latest round of interest. The discussion will be on the ethics of AI, creating, using, and teaching in the metaverse including discussion of crypto-currency, NFTs, Web3 and first layer blockchain technologies.
10 am MT
Teaching Writing and Ethics with ChatGPT
Diane Sieber
Whereas generalized academic panic hit at institutions of higher education this spring with the release of ChatGPT, a number of affordances for the teaching of writing and ethics quickly became apparent to instructors in the Herbst Program for Engineering, Ethics and Society. Instead of banning the use of ChatGPT, as was occurring across the university campus, several faculty experimented with a range of approaches for deploying ChatGPT with STEM students. The outcomes of these trials will be presented, with specific examples of methodology, student progress and preliminary best practices.
1pm MT
Beyond the Buzz: Using AI and ChatGPT for Asynchronous Online Learning
Meryl Krieger and Clayton Colmon
In this interactive session we explore ways of engaging with AI/ChatGPT in asynchronous online learning. Extending established practices for effective course design, we gamestorm ideas for building assignments, planning lessons, and facilitating activities that take advantage of AI/ChatGPT. We also delve into examples that can help participants think critically about modeling meaningful work with these tools. Participants should bring questions to investigate and play around with together.
2 pm MT
What is AI and How Can I Use it?
Jesse Thompson and Aaron Bauer
Aaron Bauer and Jesse Thompson from Colorado State University will discuss the capacities, uses, and limitations of AI tools with a specific focus on ChatGPT. Participants will be asked to brainstorm possible uses of the tool while also being encouraged to voice any concerns they might have about employing this technology.

Friday, April 7

10 am MT
Exploring the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) chatbots in Teaching, Learning and Assessment
Dr. Keith Young, eLCC Keynote

AI Chatbots like ChatGPT have shown great potential in revolutionizing teaching, learning and assessments in
various educational contexts. They can be used by students and teachers in innovative and creative ways to
augment and enhance their work, alongside potentially looking after somewhat more mundane tasks. However,
there are also a variety of limitations and concerns associated with their use. This participatory session will
explore how they can be used through practical demonstrations and in turn share and collate our collective
understanding of the opportunities and challenges associated with their use.
