Mo money, mo problems: The shifting landscape of online learning instructional design in higher education
The COVID pandemic response triggered renewed attention on instructional design. Designers and managers found their processes thrust into the spotlight. Some ID shops experienced rapid growth and accelerated plans to innovate. Others struggled to persevere through swift changes and increased demand on already strained resources. This recent boom and bust cycle of learning design offers lessons for us all.
Centralized and decentralized models have given way to hybrid approaches to supporting online learning instructional design. Traditional roles have been upended with service-learning and clinical faculty embedded in disciplines. Meanwhile, investments in learning technologies and tools have infused nearly $5B into the industry in the last two years. We’ll explore this shifting landscape together, reflecting on how more funding does not necessarily equate to better learning outcomes.
